Access Statement – Your Space Apartments

Our company operates in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and the Equality Act 2010 and, as such, we encourage all prospective guests to talk to us about any special accommodation requirements they may have. We will be pleased to discuss our most appropriate accommodation solutions with the aim of making all guests’ stay as comfortable as possible.

Introduction

Your Space Apartments operates properties in eight locations across Cambridge City Centre (where the head office is based).

We offer a smart, comfortable and affordable alternative to hotel living when it comes to leisure or business trips or short/long term visits. Our aim is to provide our customers with a home-from-home experience while they are away and to make their stay as enjoyable as possible by having a caring and professional approach.

Your Space Apartments properties are situated in Cambridge, close to major routes in the city centre as well as the A14, M11, Cambridge Business and Science Parks. Most are within walking distance of the city centre approx. 10-20-minute walk.

Your Space Apartments operates multiple units in 8 residential buildings; Hamiltons, Nelson Court, Eden House, Byron House, Jubilee House, Cambridge Place, Market Rise and Manor House. We offer a mixture of Studio, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments; some units are located on the ground floor, and some units offers lift facilities. None of our apartments have any additional disability facilities at this time, however some are accessible.

Pre-Arrival

For full details and maps of how to reach our apartments please see the directions section of our website. Alternatively, you can plan your journey by car or public transport using www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/; simply enter your postcode and ours, which is given to you on your pre-arrival email confirmation, to get directions.

The nearest train station is Cambridge in the city centre to most of our apartments, alternatively Cambridge North for the Hamiltons, Nelson Court and Manor House. Taxis are available at both stations, if you require an accessible taxi this can be booked in advance. httpss://www.panthertaxis.co.uk/our-vehicles

The nearest airport is London Stansted Airport, 31 miles away from the city centre. It is possible to get a train from the airport to Cambridge train station (operated by Greater Anglia) or a National Express bus to Cambridge coach station (Parkside) Service No 777. All buses can accommodate wheelchairs (please check with National Express as certain checks need to be made to ensure they can provide travel).

Cambridge Shopmobility is based in 2 key locations in the heart of the city centre, Grand Arcade and Grafton Centre Shopping Centres. Any person with a mobility restriction is welcome to become a member and members can hire mobility equipment for holidays and day excursions.  httpss://www.cambridge.gov.uk/borrow-a-scooter-from-shopmobility

The city streets in the areas surrounding the apartments are not all suited for wheelchairs, but most have level concrete pathways.

There is mostly easy access to the apartments for deliveries of supermarket shopping; if you wish to have shopping delivered please contact our Guest Services team to provide the apartment’s full address or see your pre-arrival email confirmation.

Apartment Blocks’ Entrances and Public Areas

 

The entrances to Eden House, Byron House, Manor House, Hamiltons and Nelson Court are all on the ground floor, with level access. The main entrance to Jubilee House is up 4 steps, Cambridge Place 16 stairs up and Market Rise 8 steps up.  All the main doors can be opened using security codes and keys, and the main entrance door widths are as follows:

 

  • Eden House:  81 cm for main door, lift door 82 cm
  • Byron House:  106 cm for main door, 90 cm for door access to each floor
  • Manor House:  112 cm for main door
  • Hamiltons: 85 cm for main door, 80 cm for internal door (front and back), lift door 80 cm
  • Nelson Court:  105 cm for main door
  • Jubilee House: 85 cm for main door
  • Cambridge Place:  87 cm for main door
  • Market Rise:  91 cm for main door

All public areas, halls, stairs landings and lifts are well lit using a combination of ceiling and wall lights (fluorescent lighting is used in the lifts). Corridors are slightly dimmer, lit by wall lights.

Public corridor widths and floor coverings are as follows for each block:

There are lifts at Eden House and Hamiltons (one in each building), the lifts do have audio announcements and tactile buttons.
There is a mirror on the back of each lift.

There is no signage in the corridors, although the numbers on the apartment doors are raised.

The following information describes a typical apartment that has the most accessibility.
We do not provide additional disability facilities at this time, although some apartments are more accessible than others. Please contact our Reservations team if you require any more information regarding more accessible units.

Apartment Description

For one of the most accessible apartments we offer the below statement is based on the Hamiltons Apartments.

Unit Entrance

The apartment external door widths are 84 cm.
The apartment internal door widths are 81 cm

Apartment corridors are well lit, by wall lights.

All measurements taken within the apartment are typical of a standard apartment within the Hamiltons. However, they may vary slightly from apartment to apartment (for instance the kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms), depending of the apartment location within the block and varying apartment layouts.

Living Area and Corridor

The corridors are well lit with ceiling spot lights. The living area within the apartment has a mixture of seating, with sofas, sofa beds, dining chairs. All units are furnished slightly differently, for any advice regarding this, please contact our Reservations team. The majority of furniture is moveable and can be rearranged if requested. Most dining chairs are without arms.

There is a TV in each apartment – DVD player available on request living area with subtitles and audio description available.

Lighting within the living area consists of ceiling lights (in some cases spot lights) and floor lamps.

 

The flooring is wooden throughout the corridor and living areas. All the apartments are on one level.

 

  • Sofa: 36cm from floor to seat
  • Dining table: 75cm from floor
    to top of the table

Kitchen

Most kitchens within the apartments are open plan in style.

 

The heights of appliances are as follows:

 

  • Oven:
    120 cm from the handle on the door (drop down doors)
  • Hob: 90 cm
  • Microwave: 147 cm (from the plate within the microwave to the floor)

There are also dishwasher and washing machine facilities, integrated in the lower level cupboards.

The work surface / food preparation area is 90.5 cm high. The highest shelf within a cupboard is 198 cm. The highest shelf within a fridge/freezer is 178 cm and the lowest drawer of the fridge/freezer is 30 cm. All crockery, glassware and other kitchen equipment can be moved to lower level shelving on request.

All of the sink taps located within the Hamiltons kitchens are 1 lever basin mixer taps. However, some apartment kitchens contain traditional turning basin taps, please enquire if you require a certain type.

The kitchens are well lit, spot lights are used throughout, and there is also a separate light on the cooker hood. The flooring is wooden.

Bedrooms and Sleeping Areas

Within the apartments, bedrooms are not numbered (the apartment main doors have raised numbers).

All apartments in the Hamiltons contain double beds and single beds (in the two bedroom). The majority of bedroom furniture can be moved, although some bedrooms contain built in wardrobes. Wardrobe rails are not adjustable.

Each apartment differs slightly in size; most contain one larger bedroom and one smaller bedroom, which could be suitable for a personal assistant/carer or friend/family member. Some apartments living room contains a sofa bed, or we can provide a put you up bed which could also meet these needs if required.

Smaller bedrooms in the Hamiltons have 112 cm space each side of the bed (the smallest width being 100 cm). The larger bedrooms hold a transfer space of at least 118 cm on one side of the bed. The height of the beds from the floor to the top of the mattress is 52 cm. All beds have 18 cm space under the beds.

Rooms are bright and evenly lit, with ceiling lighting and table lamps on each bedside table. There is a good colour contrast between the floor, walls and doors; carpet is short pile.

All bedding is non-feather.

Bathrooms, Shower rooms and WCs (En-suite or shared)

Main bathrooms in apartments have a either a walk-in shower or a shower over a bath. The height of the bath sides are 64 cm.  Please contact our Reservations team if you specifically require a walk-in shower.

The height of the WC from the floor to seat is 40.5 cm. The height of the wash basin is 77 cm. All sinks have pedestals underneath. All taps within the bathrooms are 1 lever basin mixer taps. Lighting in bathrooms are spotlights, and flooring is tiling throughout.

Grounds and Gardens

Hamiltons has back and front external areas.
These areas have a level concrete paved surface, there is no seating available.

Additional Information

At this time, our team have not received any Disability Awareness Training.

We are happy to welcome assistance dogs, and a water bowl can be provided on request. We also have some apartments that have an area where a mobility scooter can be charged, please ask at Reservations team for more details on how to access this.

The nearest General Hospital with an A&E unit and walk in NHS facility is the Addenbrookes Hospital, approx. 5 miles away (or less).

High speed WIFI is available in every apartment, free of charge.
